Benefiting: A Place To Be

Where: Bluemont Station Brewery & Winery

A Place To Be

A Place to Be was founded in 2010 by Tom Sweitzer and Kim Tapper. Our mission is to create community, belonging, and hope through music therapy, performance, and the expressive arts. We serve all ages with a large focus on youth and young adults with disabilities, medical, and mental health challenges.

We provide individual therapy sessions focused on a wide variety of clinical goals such as improving speech, motor skills, cognition, sensory or emotional processing, and learning mental health resiliency tools. As well as therapeutic social groups that work on self-expression, friendship making, and reducing isolation and loneliness. Parent support and wrap-around services are offered for families to increase their quality of life and success.

We deliver an array of performance opportunities featuring our clients and focused on advocacy, education, self-expression, confidence building, while teaching about empathy, inclusion, acceptance, and mental wellness and coping skills. Our summer camps are filled with fun, friendship-making, creative expression, and more.

We are Inova Hospital System’s provider of medical music therapy across all five of their hospitals from the NICU to end-of-life care, pediatrics, oncology, behavioral health, and the ICU. We also provide music therapy services to community partners such as Echo, Makom, Jill’s House, and The Keller School.

Forty percent (40%) of all A Place To Be families receive some portion of financial aid support. Since inception, we have maintained that struggles with finances should not be a barrier to therapeutic services or to having access to community performances and social engagement for families.
A Place To Be is a nonprofit 501(c) (3)* with locations in Middleburg and Leesburg.
